Long Distance Moving

Moving to Another State? Minimize Stress with These Moving Tips

Most people view long distance moving as a stressful and cost-intensive process. However, it is entirely possible to turn your interstate move into a fun-filled adventure. All it takes is a little added preparation, an open mind, and an ounce of curiosity. These interstate moving tips can help you cultivate these things and prepare you for the trip ahead without adding more stress to your family’s interstate move.

1. Pack Household Items with Care

From cherished heirlooms and kitchen appliances to movies and electronics, it is important that you pack every item with care. Failure to do so increases the risk of damaged property and moving delays. You can also add more stress to the unpacking process if you haphazardly throw everything into them. Avoid these issues (and most others) by:

– Carefully packaging breakable items in bubble wrap or newspaper;
– Packaging like items together in the same box;
– Clearly labeling all packed boxes appropriately (originating room and contents);
– Organizing packed boxes according to room;
– Organizing paperwork and documents before packing them;
– Labeling boxes that contain breakables and valuable items as “FRAGILE;”
– Not overpacking boxes, which can make them difficult to load, unload, and transport.

2. Give Yourself Ample Travel Time

One of the biggest mistakes that families make during state-to-state moving is not giving themselves enough travel time. Unfortunately, if a mishap occurs during the move, they’ll fall behind schedule. As a result, the trip can become inherently more stressful. Avoid this issue by ensuring you plan ample travel time for your state-to-state move. Even better, give yourself extra time so that you and your family can enjoy the trip. For the best results, make frequent stops, and plan a mini-vacation along the way.

3. Overbudget Your Trip

Money is another common stressor during interstate moves. If at all possible, avoid this by adding a little extra cash to your moving fund. Consider the possibility of vehicle failures, extra hotel time if inclement weather occurs, added food costs, and extra toll fees in case they’re more expensive than anticipated.

4. Research Your Route and Points of Interest

Once you know where you’re moving, start planning your trip. Look at possible routes to your location and research potential points of interest. Driving through Tennessee? Plan to stop at Graceland. Is the Grand Canyon on your route? Why not stop and see it? Plan your route appropriately and leave early enough, there’s no reason why you can’t turn the long-distance moving trip into a fun-filled adventure.

5. Hire a Moving Team for Your Interstate Move

Rather than attempt to make the move with all your items in tow, which only increases the chances of delays, accidents, and vehicle failure, consider hiring a moving fleet instead. Doing so will allow you to rest easy, knowing your personal and household items will arrive, safe and sound, which enables you to better enjoy the trip during your state-to-state move.

6. Only Pack What You Need for the Trip

If you opt to hire movers for your state-to-state move, travel lightly during the trip. Focus on packing only the items you’ll need along the way (clothing, shoes, hygiene items, travel pillows and blankets for the car, books and activities for the kids, etc.). Otherwise, you’ll risk having the car overpacked, which can irritate riders (who can then, in turn, irritate you).

7. Bring Some Tasty Snacks Along to Minimize Stops

Few things are as irritating as unnecessary pit stops during a long moving trip, and nothing eats up more time! Minimize the risk of irritating extra stops during your interstate move by bringing along some snacks for the ride. Protein-rich items tend to hold people over longer (nuts, seeds, granola, etc.), but easy-t0-transport fruits and vegetables can be a great option as well. Try to avoid foods that need refrigerated or that can end up spilling. Otherwise, you’ll risk them going bad or ending up on the floor.
